On the Lexical Meaning of Conditional Connectives in Chinese
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper examines some common logical notions, their explicit encoding in English and in Chinese, their representations in logic, and their semantic characterizations. Detailed treatments are given to the analysis of the necessary condition and the counterfactual protasisinducer ‘yàobúshì’ (if-not-be) in Chinese. Factors affecting the comprehension of these terms are explored in detail. Given that the characterization of the necessary condition is a rather familiar topic, the novel aspect of this study lies in the analysis of ‘yàobúshì’, which is characterized here as an explicit counterfactual marker taking on a proposition which is both veridical and a falsifying contingent.

متن کاملThe Effect of Interaction on Lexical Acquisition
This research showed that appropriate input and suitable contexts for interaction among students can lead to successful second language acquisition (SLA). This study based on Swain's (2005) notion of collaborative dialogue, aimed to study whether EFL learners participating in negotiation of meaning based tasks collaborate with each other and, if so, to investigate the role of this behavior in ...
متن کاملMDL-based Acquisition of Substitutability Relationships between Discourse Connectives
Knowledge of which lexical items convey the same meaning in a given context is important for many Natural Language Processing tasks. This paper concerns the substitutability of discourse connectives in particular. This paper proposes a datadriven method based on a Minimum Description Length (MDL) criterion for automatically learning substitutability of connectives. The method is shown to outper...

This study was intended first to categorize the L2 learners in terms of their learning style preferences and second to investigate if their learning preferences are related to lexical inferencing. Moreover, strategies used for lexical inferencing and text related issues of text density and parts of speech were studied to determine their moderating effects and the best predictors of lexical infe...
